Amazing Vows for a New Beginning

Happy New Year to all our readers. May this year bring happiness, friendship, and prosperity to all our families

People all over the world celebrate January 1st as New Year with great enthusiasm and cheer. They welcome the New Year with music and dance, and they party all night just to welcome the beginning of another year. Some like to celebrate and enjoy with friends at a party or event and some like to stay indoors with just close family and make the celebration a memorable one. The celebration begins from the evening of December 31st and last till early hours of January 1st. The party place is beautifully decorated with lights and decorations. And when it is 12 AM, the sky is filled with colorful fireworks that brighten the whole sky.

People even take New Year Resolutions for the coming year. And they try hard to achieve their New Year goals whether it is losing weight, quitting smoking, or to exercise every day. These resolutions just lie around us; it has nothing to do with anybody else, community, or the country. But do we really need a specific day to make resolutions and follow them to make some good changes in ourselves or our country? The answer is No. Each day brings in new hopes and new aspirations, it’s we who has to grab this opportunity and bring the change. If we give up and let go the precious moment just to wait for New Year to fulfill our goal, then there is surely a possibility that we have lost our chance to even give it a try.

New Year

Each one of us like to celebrate, enjoy, and party with friends and family but how many of us think about bringing a little smile on not so privileged kids by giving them the basics of life that is food, water, and warm clothes for winter.  There are many old age homes in the country where there are many elderly men and women who wait throughout the year for their son and daughter to come and visit them. Can’t we bring a smile on their face by visiting them regularly? I am sure they’ll call us as their son and daughter.

“The real winners in life are the people who look at every situation with an expectation that they can make it work or make it better.”

We all are waiting for the Prime Minister to bring back the good days and for that some of us are even criticizing him, but as a citizen of the country, are we doing our part? Just one man cannot make a better nation, it is a team work. I, you, we, all of us need to come together to make a beautiful and developing country. It is very easy to point out mistakes but it takes great courage to take a stand and bring a change.

New Year

I take resolution on New Year for myself but somehow in a month or two it’s hard for me to stick to it and finally I give up. But this year I have taken a pledge to build a better me as well as a better country.

  • STOP Food Wastage: Food is important for every living being to survive and grow. Whether it’s human or animal, we all need food to live. So why is it being wasted? Recent studies say that one-third of the food produced in the country is getting wasted at harvesting, transporting, packaging, and consuming. Whether it is a party, wedding, or any big event, tons of cooked food is wasted. Instead of throwing away the food, pack the food and send it to the shelters for the needy at the earliest so the food doesn’t get spoil. Buy and cook as per the need and store any leftovers in the fridge and reuse them.
  • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Try to go green by following these three ‘R’s which will help to minimize waste. Reduce the use of paper and plastic as we all know that waste is one of the biggest problems that the world is facing. Recycle paper, tin, plastic. Some of the food waste from fruits and vegetables, yard waste can be recycled into organic compost that is added to plants which helps the plants to grow. Instead of plastic bags, carry your own fabric bags to carry groceries. Stop using plastic straws, containers, and bags. Plastic is the worst enemy of our planet and it is harming many animals and sea creatures. Other way to go green is to make use of reusable or biodegradable dinnerware at a party. Following these ‘R’s will not only save money but also will help our environment to be healthy and safe.
  • Be Kind and Helpful: Being kind will not cost you anything. It will only make you feel good about yourself. Try to help the ones who are really in need. Help can be as little as lending your seat in a bus or train to any old or a lady, helping can be sharing some drinking water to the needy on a hot summer day, another way to help someone is by giving your food to a poor. If you see a mom with a cranky kid in a store, don’t judge her; instead offer her your help. Some kind words and a little help with money, food, or even your old clothes which you are not using anymore can save someone’s life. Being kind and helpful is just like doing good without expecting anything in return.
  • Donate & Volunteer: Everyone is busy with their home and work in today’s world. But, if you have some free time and that dedication to serve the community then you can volunteer and help the society. You can volunteer at your local schools, library, senior center, or you can also tutor kids in your neighborhood. You can even visit special needs school and spend some of your time with beautiful kids who always love making new friends. And if you can, you should donate food, clothing, and money to different charities. ‘Be a Friend’ and do something for the society from your part, and I am sure it will give you inner peace and happiness.
  • Eat Healthy Stay Healthy: It is very important for one to be healthy and active when you have to serve the community. And for that you need to eat healthy and nutritional food. A healthy and balanced diet is the key to good health. So try including fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains, dairy, nuts & seeds, egg, meat in your daily diet. Instead of picking sugary drinks and sodas, opt for plain water and freshly made pure juice. A healthy diet will provide you the necessary nutrients that will improve your overall health. Limit salt, sugar, and highly processed foods, instead go for fresh foods.
  • Exercise: Being healthy refers to a good lifestyle which includes eating healthy food and doing exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day will keep you away from many diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Exercise helps to reduce stress and depression and improves your mood by relaxing your mind. There are different forms of exercise which can help you to improve your overall strength and keep you fit and healthy. Regular exercise helps in controlling body weight which in turn reduces the risk of many health problems. It improves the blood circulation in the body and relaxes the muscles.
  • Meditation: Meditation is a way to connect your heart, mind, and yourself. Just by closing your eyes and siting in a relaxed position will help you with so many problems. It will not only reduce stress but also keep your inner self calm. Meditation is the best way to keep our thoughts and mind at peace by giving inner self the strength to perform daily activities and handle all situations. It brightens our mind by generating new ideas and improves concentration. If you haven’t meditated before, then start with 5-10 minutes initially, and can increase gradually to keep your mind and body refreshed all day.
  • Plant Trees: Planting trees in our surroundings is beneficial as per the current environment condition. Excessive heat and scarcity of rain is leading to drought, wildfires, and shortage of clean drinking water. Planting trees will provide us with fresh air, increase oxygen level and reduce ozone, reduces heat, prevents soil erosion, conserve energy, reduces water evaporation from the lands, and also trees protect us from the harmful ultra violet rays of sun. So, let’s plant and nurture a tree to save our environment.

A little change can make a big difference. So lets join hands together by giving back to our community and making it beautiful place by doing simple things. This New Year, I am taking vows to make myself better, to make my surrounding better, and to save our planet.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Its time to forget the past and start a New Beginning

Tips for Good Dental Hygiene

Hello readers, hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. Today I have a question for you? Will you guess the answer? What’s the first thing that attracts in a person with a glance, voice, or smile? Yes!!! Your guess is right; it’s our beautiful smile which gives a heart touching warmth feeling. Actions speak louder than words said by Jimmy Cliff, yes it is true, and a beautiful smile is good enough to express our feelings. So to have a beautiful smile the first thing we must have is good dental hygiene.

So lets see what is Dental Hygiene? What should be done to keep our teeth hygienic always? Dental Hygiene is nothing but germ free, healthy, and shining tooth. In olden days our ancestors were lucky enough because they are gifted everything from nature so exempted from tooth problems. But in today’s world 80% of the people are suffering from teeth related problems such as bleeding gums-blood comes out from the gums due to rough brushing, dental plaque-a thin transparent layer of bacteria formed on the teeth, cavities, toothaches, tooth sensitivity, bad breath.

Some of the general dental disease our teeth can suffer due to poor dental hygiene are as below:

Tartar – Tartar is the common problem seen in every older person and chances to every child not brushing teeth properly. Some calculus hard mineral when stick to the tooth and leads to turn color from white to pale yellow or brown in color results in plaque. This dental plaque can clean by dentist or can try to cure through homely remedies.

Cavities – Bacteria takes place when tooth are not brushed properly and plaque sticks to the tooth. These bacteria’s slowly demolishes the tooth enamel and form cavities. It is clearly seen in black color within the tooth. To stop bacteria further demolishing tooth it has to be seen to the dentist.

Tooth ache – Tooth ache is a pain felt in the tooth which is due to gum infections or tooth decay. Tooth cavities when formed it may reach to the nerves and causes pain. Tooth ache also occurs when tooth broken into chips due to calcium efficiency.

Bad breath – Bad breath occurs due to gum infections, remaining food debris which causes to improper cleaning of tooth and less water intake.

Tooth Sensitivity – Sensitive tooth is a common problem from every one in ten person. The uneven food habits like hot and cold food items, or drinks taken simultaneously one after the other. Tooth decay is also the main reason for sensitive tooth.

These dental diseases when not severe can be treated at home or in other way we can say proper home dental caring can avoid these type of problems. Earlier we were not having such tooth related problems as people lifestyle was fully naturistic and limited with proper timing. But today we have no fixed routine and we eat or chew in frequent intervals. This uneven eating habit leads to leave food debris in between the tooth which may cause many problems.

Earlier people used to chew the Neem twig at one end until it appears like a bristle and used as a toothbrush. The scientific studies tell us that the bitter taste of the Neem kills the bacteria and keeps the tooth healthy. Presently people are more dependent on fast foods with no eating schedule which disturbs the cleaning of tooth and indirectly affects their tooth. It is OK to eat the fast foods once in a while but people are making a habit of eating it daily. Every time its not possible to gargle or clean their mouth specially when they are somewhere out which results in one of the causes of tooth problems.

Healthy calcium rich food boosts strength to your teeth but not sugary stuff and fast foods. With the strength of your teeth, dental hygiene is also important. Here is the step by step procedure to maintain a hygienic tooth.

  1. The first step is to select a soft, flexible and good quality of toothbrush. Remember hard brush bristles may result in bleeding gums.
  2. The next thing is to choose toothpaste which consists of some natural ingredients instead of high chemical products because the chemicals in it damages the tooth and results in the tooth decay. The other thing a toothpaste should include is fluoride which helps prevent cavities and makes teeth stronger.
  3. After that, brush the tooth in a circular motion no more than two minutes which is always advised by the doctors so that the germs which are stuck in between the teeth will be cleared up easily and also removes the thin layer created on the tooth.
  4. Brushing twice a day is the best way to protect your tooth from bacteria and germs. Everyone has a habit of brushing in the morning but from today make a habit of brushing at night too because the food which is settled on the teeth after your dinner causes more bacteria and results in cavity.
  5. The foremost thing you have to do is to reduce the intake of sweets and chocolates daily. It’s the main thing that creates more fuss in your teeth.
  6. Floss your teeth to remove any food stuck between your teeth which can cause cavities.
  7. Use a mouth rinse to avoid bad smelling and kill germs.

After hygienic cleaning make a note of some homely remedies to keep the infection at the bay and it also helps in solving minor tooth problems. Let us see what can be helpful for our teeth:

  1. Clove oil is the best home medicine used to avoid the tooth pain if the pain is from tooth decay.
  2. Saline water can be used to gargle after brushing or can use ‘Listerine’ mouth wash to clean all the bacteria and lead to germ free tooth.
  3. Pale yellow tooth should be clean using pinch of salt with your toothbrush or only massage tooth with salt after brushing.
  4. Flossing habit is useful to bring out hidden food particles helps to keep our tooth clean.
  5. Tongue cleaning is necessary to stay away from bacteria.
  6. Caramel containing food should be minimize as it sticks to the tooth and not easily cleaned off.

These steps help to prevent from teeth related problems when it is in initial stage. If the problem is more complex then consult a dentist for a proper treatment. The dentists first clean the tooth in a professional way by treatments such as tooth scaling, tooth polishing, debridement for tartar followed by a fluoride treatment. If the teeth have a cavity at initial stage then cement is filled in it to expel from further damage. If it is at final stage then the root canal treatment must be performed. Root canal is a treatment which stops the tooth from the following damage instead of detaching. In some cases if the teeth are damaged completely then it will be removed and instead of that a cement tooth will be fixed.

So guys, beware of the food and water you take. Cut the problem at the roots and don’t make it extra large which results in a loss of teeth. So at this moment check your teeth whether any damage is occurred and consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Gujarati Methi Dhebra – Methi Paratha Recipe

Today I am going to share one of my favorite paratha recipe with you all. It’s Methi Dhebra or Paratha, a sweet and spicy flatbread containing two types of flours and fresh fenugreek leaves. And to make it more delicious jaggery, buttermilk, and other spices along with ginger garlic are added. These paratha’s stays fresh up to a week which makes it perfect food when travelling. The aroma and the taste of Methi Paratha’s is divine when made with fresh fenugreek leaves. Fenugreek  leaves has some important nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Vitamin K, Vitamin B, and many antioxidants which acts as a natural remedy to treat many diseases. Fenugreek is also know for its excellent qualities to boost immunity during winters.

Green herbs like Methi, spinach, mustard, kale, amaranth, are specially taken during winters as they are packed with many vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that helps to fight disease. Though this recipe takes little time, but for yummy and healthy food you have to spend some time. If bajri flour(pearl millet flour) is unavailable then you can make the paratha’s with just whole wheat flour. Fenugreek leaves are little bitter in taste, so we add buttermilk and jaggery which will reduce the bitterness from the paratha’s. You may skip the jaggery if you have any food restrictions.  In any form you will definitely love this variety of Gujarat.

I usually pack these Methi Paratha’s for my kid’s lunchbox who has long school hours and needs nutrition. I love the way my Mom makes it for me as they are loaded with just love and nothing else. I have tried hard to do justice to her recipe but as we all know, no one can beat ‘Maa ke haath ka khana’ (Food made by Mom). So lets not wait anymore, and check out the recipe.

Ingredients:

1 Cup Fenugreek leaves

1 ½ Cup of Whole Wheat flour

1 Cup of Bajri Flour (Pearl Millet Flour)

1 Tbsp of Jaggery

2 Tsp Ginger Garlic Paste

1 Tsp Green Chili Paste

½ Tsp Ajwain (Carom Seeds)

1 Tsp Till (Sesame Seeds)

1 Tsp Red Chili Powder

1 Tsp Turmeric Powder

1 Cup Buttermilk

2 Tbsp Oil + more to drizzle on paratha’s while cooking

Salt as per requirement

Method:
  1. Rinse few times fenugreek leaves with water to remove any dirt. Keep it aside in a colander to drain all water from it. Once all the water is drained, chop the fenugreek leaves and keep it aside.
  2. Sieve both the flours in a large and wide bowl.
  3. Add salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, ajwain, till, ginger garlic paste, and green chili paste. Add oil and mix it well with your hands.
  4. Add chopped fenugreek leaves and jaggery to the flour. Mix it well.
  5. Now slowly add buttermilk to the flour, and form a smooth and firm dough.
  6. Cover the dough and let it stand for 20-30 minutes.
  7. Heat a flat pan/ tawa on medium heat.
  8. Now make palm sized dough ball and dust it with dry wheat flour.
  9. Gently roll the paratha of about 5-6 inch in diameter in circular using a rolling pin. Dust the paratha if it sticks.
  10. Place the paratha on the hot pan and cook on both sides till you see brown spots.
  11. Drizzle some oil on one side of the paratha then flip it. Using a spatula gently press all over the paratha, and now drizzle oil on the second side too then flip once again and press it gently with spatula. This way cook the paratha on both sides on medium heat.
  12. Repeat step 8-11 with the remaining dough.
  13. Methi paratha’s or Dhebra’s are ready to serve.

Hot and Delicious Methi Paratha’s are served with plain yogurt, Raita, Green Chili Pickle, or Aam Chunda. This recipe is very easy and popular in Gujarat during winters. The same recipe can be prepared by using only wheat flour. Or instead of bajri you can use rice flour and some amount of gram flour. But the combination of wheat flour and bajri flour gives the best output and the paratha’s can stay weak long. These paratha’s can be made for lunch, dinner, or just breakfast.  We love to have Methi paratha’s with ghee(clarified butter) on it with our morning tea.
